Plan on becoming a CEO? Make sure your name is Andrew or Michael.
Researcher and corporate advisor Conrad Liveris has just released his latest report, which looks at the educational and professional experiences of ASX200 CEOs.
The graphic above highlights much of what he found about the current state of play.🔝
The results speak for themselves..... and it’s well worth reading the finer detail.
What Liveris has sought to do here is to find the trends and commonalities in who gets to the top of Australian businesses, and what questions (understandings and solutions) can come from that knowledge.
Turns out it’s a pretty narrow pathway and pipeline to become a CEO.
And if your name isn’t Andrew or Michael, and oh yeah, if you’re a female of any sort, the odds are stacked pretty heavily against you before you even get a look in.
What we do know is that the typical Australian CEO is indeed a guy named Andrew with finance experience and an MBA, who has followed an internal career track to CEO. He's not entrepreneurial and has primarily domestic experience.
As @jeanette_kc @hackerexchange says, ‘I’m sure he's qualified, a nice guy, and very capable - but I've got a sneaking suspicion that the future of work is going to require fundamentally different types of leaders.’
We agree.
But we believe the future will need a diverse range of leaders who are global citizens, socially conscious, curious, resilient to risk, diverse in thinking, collaborative, empathic ... and willing to put egos aside to collectively work toward a better world for all.
We’re working on building those leaders up now by upskilling the youth of today, and like @jeanette_kc, we cannot wait to see them step into the top jobs, and take Australia forward.
Thanks to Conrad Liveris for your fantastic research and continuing this important conversation.
