Two jam-packed days of real-world industry-backed learning, skill-building and career mentorship in partnership with the University of Sydney.
In a rapidly changing technological world, we need to equip girls with the future skillsets, entrepreneurial mindsets and practical techsets they need to lead, succeed and thrive in their future careers.
The education system is doing what it can to keep up with this pace of change, but we need more real-world, industry-aligned learning so that young people can navigate ever more complex careers in the shifting world economy, and build the critical 21st enterprise skills they’ll need to become our country’s job creators, not just job seekers.
After the huge success of the 2017 and 2018 girledworld Summits at The University of Melbourne and RMIT, supported by the Australian Federal and Victorian State governments, the girledworld WOW 'World of Work' Summit 2019 ignited The University of Sydney for two transformational days of future facing, goal setting and career planning for girls (Year 7 - Year 12) on Friday 15 February and Saturday 16 February 2019.
The University of Sydney WOW Summit gathered together top global speakers (keynotes and virtual) from some of the world's biggest companies (Twitter, Airbnb, Atlassian, Microsoft, PwC), Australian industry experts and outstanding career mentors to help girls explore the new world of work, what future cities will look like (Internet of Things), career pathways in the emerging technology and STEM sectors, and helped them unpack the real skills they need to build to ensure future tertiary pathways, internship opportunities and future employability.
The girledworld WOW Summit connected Australian high school girls with the leaders of today to give them the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to make informed choices about their future career pathways.
Speakers (live keynotes and virtual speakers) included Holly Ransom Emergent, Aubrey Blanche Atlassian, Anna Liebel Unisuper, Rita Arigo Microsoft, Dr Catherine Lopes PwC, Dr Catherine Ball She Flies and World of Drones, Madeleine Grummet girledworld, Rebecca Ruggles Airbnb, Liz Devlin Twitter and many more! Plus students enjoyed learning from each other in breakout workshops and interactive speaker sessions!
This event was aligned to the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities, Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies learning areas, and recognised the importance of the development of disciplinary knowledge, real world enterprise skills (critical thinking, problem solving and Design Thinking) and general cross-curriculum capabilities in young people (See below).
girledworld WOW Summit 2019 streams included World Shaping (Mindsets), Future Facing (Techsets) and Work Ready (Skillsets) and was delivered at the University of Sydney campus across two jam-packed days of interactive learning, problem solving, leadership cultivation, industry mentorship and entrepreneurial skill-building.
All participants received a Certificate of Critical Thinking, and participants in the Friday Industry Challenge Day received a Micro-Credential in Design Thinking to add to their resumes. Friday Industry Challenge Partners included Virgin Australia, Microsoft Australia and Women for Election Australia.
